While this time of year lends itself to holiday and end-of-year promotions, The Boston Globe is capitalizing on one more seasonal advantage — the Red Sox winning the World Series. In their recent round of email marketing, The Globe is tying its trial subscription rate to a special commemorative book (in print!) about the Red Sox’s 2013 season and World Series win.

Boston Globe World Series promotion

Some great things about this promotion: local sports fans are an easy demographic to convert into paying subscribers, and this promotion ties into the celebratory air throughout Massachusetts right now. Also, we like how the promotion has a clean design, with consumer benefits in bullet points and a big orange button with action-inducing copy. Plus, the promotion expiration date above the button is great! We would have liked to have seen a bigger image that’s not slanted away, and the red copy above the headline looks more like an email viewing disclaimer than promotional text. A big font for “Series Championship Special” couldn’t have hurt. And it would have been really great if one of the bullet points highlighted The Globe’s own coverage of the 2014 season, perhaps mentioning a sports writer’s or columnist’s insightful predictions or analysis. As it stands now, the promotion will likely help feed The Globe’s trial funnel, but sports fans who only want the book may unsubscribe before converting to full price. Tying The Globe’s content to sports may have increased The Globe’s revenues down the pipeline by retaining more trial takers as paying subscribers. But overall, The Globe is wise to capitalize on Red Sox fever right before the holidays. And every online newspaper should be looking to capitalize on local sports wins in the future for selling more digital subscriptions.
