TeamSnap has definitely found an interesting and profitable niche — team sports managers and coaches who are tired of phone trees, paper sign-up sheets, and other disorganization tools and want a seamless online/mobile tool for organizing team sports for both kids and adults.

With a freemium site, TeamSnap lets coaches and team managers organize intramural and kids teams by entering the email addresses for players or their parents. However, Ken McDonald, VP of Customer Acquisition, told us the site’s audience is even more enthusiastic about mobile usage. (When was the last time you saw anyone with a laptop at a sporting event? Now when was the last time you saw someone with a mobile device?) So the site has bundled in mobile usage with its free and premium plans.

However, entering email addresses on a mobile device is cumbersome (fat fingers) if not impossible (how many email addresses do you know off the top of your head?). Yet, because TeamSnap now gets 63% of its audience traffic from mobile devices, the site had to innovate.

So in the near future, TeamSnap’s mobile apps will allow users to peruse their mobile address books and select people to register on the site.

However, they’re not completely in the clear. As we’ve mentioned time and again, getting users to register for your mobile or tablet app through your website is a best practice since it lets you retain customer data and avoid commission fees from Apple and Android. But unfortunately, the site’s mobile users will go through app stores even when handed a card with the site’s URL.

Ken will be discussing these obstacles to acquisition, as well as other ways TeamSnap has innovated its content and user experience for mobile at the Subscription Site Summit in New York this May 8-9th. If you’re interested in attending, I urge you to buy your ticket now — the early-bird price expires in just two days!
