On Sunday, Spherady, Inc. announced the launch of a subscription platform tailored to authors, athletes and “social celebrities,” allowing them to earn revenue by offering exclusive content to subscribers. Here’s how it works. Authors and others can create private online channels on Spherady and post unique content – videos, photos, music, live streams, Q&A sessions, podcasts, interviews, coaching, etc. – that is only accessible to subscribers. Subscribers pay for this exclusivity on a monthly or annual basis at a price set by the celebrity. In turn, the celebrities retain 75% of any subscription revenue and 100% of advertising and endorsement revenue they generate, while retaining complete ownership over their content. Since the December 2014 soft launch, 36 authors, athletes and celebrities have joined the site, publishing 575 posts. The posts have gotten 29,000 page views from 21 countries. The general premise is that authors and celebrities can leverage their social media contacts and convert those fans and followers into revenue. As an example, Swiss fitness model Anja Zeidler has a channel on Spherady. For $12.99 per month or $129.00 per year, subscribers get Anja’s personal training secrets, access to her video training library, nutrition and meal plans, exclusive workout plans, and more. James Anderson, a linebacker for the Dallas Cowboys, has a channel as well. For just $10.00 a year, subscribers get exclusive photos, videos, live video Q&A sessions, and “behind the scenes” access.Insider Take:It is interesting that the press release announcing the launch hangs its hat on authors, but there are only five authors among the 36, and all of the other celebrities are athletes or health and fitness experts. For now, this product seems to be niche-based, though this was pre-launch and there is certainly potential for a much broader base of channels. We love the ingenuity of the pay-for-access subscription model, which other subscription companies like Jukely, People magazine and Bandcamp have already experimented with. Authors, athletes and celebrities – and their agents and publicists – get a hosted platform on which to post whatever content they want to share with fans, and they get a big cut of the revenue. We are excited to see how Spherady evolves, and we’ll keep you updated.
