Last month the New York Times reported that Sony is testing a new, web-based, subscription TV service – PlayStation Vue. Now in beta testing in New York, Sony is offering over-the-top (OTT), live and on-demand television to select viewers in a 75-channel package including CBS, NBC, Fox, Comedy Central and the Food Network.Viewers must use their PlayStation 3 or 4 gaming consoles to watch programs online, but unlike cable TV, the experience is personalized, searchable and similar to a gaming experience, appealing to a younger demographic. Like other online on-demand video streaming sites like Netflix and Hulu, PlayStation Vue will offer viewer recommendations based on their personal preferences.Another unique feature is viewers can watch their favorite shows from the previous three days without having to record a particular show. Viewers can also save shows and movies in the cloud for up to 28 days. What they can’t do is pick and choose which channels they want. Sony will offer a bundled package of channels, though so far, ABC, Disney, HBO and CNN will not be among them, as these companies have not yet reached an agreement with Sony.Competing with cable and satellite TV companies, Sony hopes to reach viewers that aren’t satisfied with their current options, but there’s no word yet on pricing. According to a Design & Trend article, set-up and cancellation fees and long-term contracts will not be required during the beta-testing phase, but it’s unclear whether that might change when the service becomes available to the general public in the spring of 2015.Currently, there are 35 million PlayStation 3 and 4 gaming consoles in circulation, giving Sony a ready-made audience, especially among young men who love gaming and cable TV. Timing the announcement a few weeks before the holiday shopping season was also smart. Current gamers may want to switch to Sony PlayStation or upgrade their consoles, while casual gamers or viewers eager for more TV options might consider a PlayStation 3 or 4 for holiday gifts.
