By Katherine NoyesRoughly a year ago we saw the launch of Marvel Unlimited, a subscription-based mobile app that offers access to more than 15,000 comics. This week, Marvel Unlimited showed us just how savvy it is at targeting its market at the right time. Whereas pricing on the app is normally $10 per month, the Disney-owned company on Monday launched a special, limited-time offer whereby comic fans can get a month’s access for just 99 cents.Of course, paid trials are not really uncommon, but what makes this one particularly intriguing is that Marvel has linked it to the SXSW Interactive 2014 film, digital and music festival and conference that kicks off in Austin, Texas, on Friday. Fans and prospects don’t have to attend the event to get the trial offer — all they need do to get the discount is enter “CODE SXSW99” when they sign up. Also included is the ability to download up to 12 issues for consumption on the go. The offer is available to all new and returning Marvel Unlimited subscribers through March 14; thereafter, pricing will return to its original level. All of which provides a nice demonstration of how a paid trial can be timed to coincide with a relevant event, thereby “striking while the iron is hot.”And as we’ve noted before, $1 trials are often better than free trials for paid content and freemium sites.
