Sometimes a publication just needs to close shop. Despite your best efforts to keep it alive, a market dies (who’s writing for bank tellers or milkmen anymore?) and there’s no acquisition in sight. While this is a less-than-ideal outcome for any publication, it’s important to know your options. For an independent publication, the best tactic is to make a one-time billing adjustment to all subscription accounts so that they all end on the same date — say, December 31st. If any new subscribers join before then, you can adjust their accounts accordingly (or simply refuse to take on new subscribers). Then, you can walk away on your end date without any further commitment to your subscribers except a thank you. However, companies with multiple subscription sites have other options, such as rolling one publication into another or upselling subscribers on another, more expensive subscription. Nancy Brand, Director of Operations for Chartwell, spoke to the Insider audience on Tuesday about how to best go about this, and why refunds should be your last resort.
