Google’s New SEO Rules Makes Subscriptions More Critical Than Ever for Profits

In case you haven’t heard, Google is changing the SEO game in 2014. It’s going to be harder to bet on – or even discover – key words that drive traffic to your site. And there’s going to be more emphasis on “conversational search.”

But one of the biggest threats to paid content sites will be Google’s new right rail. Using Google+ profiles (which help you rank higher) and microformats, Google will now be pulling information from content sites to create its right-hand side sidebar feature (see below).

While this feature will definitely get subscriptions sites like iMDB more exposure, it will also drive less traffic to such sites as audiences are able to get basic information without clicking on search results.

This poses a serious threat to sites – both paid and free – that get the majority of their revenue from advertising and other traffic-based revenue streams.

Thus, paid content sites should seriously consider boosting their subscription marketing. That includes being prepared for the changes required to rank in “conversational search,” which SEO expert Michael Dub details succinctly in this week’s Members-Only On-Demand Video on Subscription Site Insider (get access when you join for just $1!).
