Too much news for one post, once again!LinkedIn saw a slight gain in its stock price (0.7% to $156.84) this week after introducing a new, $10/month subscription plan. The plan is cheaper than the current Premium plan, and has all the same features, except the ability to message members the user isn’t connected to. The site also revealed new Premium member features, such as profile pages with large cover images, mimicking Facebook and Twitter.Meanwhile, Paula Deen is looking to make a comeback via a new subscription site after infamously getting booted off of the Food Network for racist comments. Bloomberg Businessweek claims the new site is a PR strategy akin to Glenn Beck’s ability to grow an online audience after losing his TV show. But PR tactics aside, video streaming sites, especially for cooking shows, are poised to do well in the subscription space, especially if those sites include features not available via television, such as instantly-available and downloadable recipe sheets or cards and community engagement. While I’m no fan of Ms. Deen, this might actually be a viable business strategy to reboot her career and income. Finally, Flipkart, also known as India’s Amazon, launched its version of Amazon Prime this week. For Rs. 500, Flipkart customers can get exclusive benefits like free shipping for orders, free in-a-day guarantee delivery, same-day-guarantee delivery at 50% discount (Rs 70) and priority customer service. I covered the announcement of this launch a month ago, including the challenges the site will face in establishing recurring revenues with its customer base.
