Disney to Launch Digital Subscription Service in the U.K.

“DisneyLife is a great example of our strategy to utilize technology to connect with consumers in more direct and compelling ways,” said Robert Iger, Disney CEO.”This is the future, in many respects. We’re seeing more and more opportunities to reach consumers directly and not through middlemen, and we’re seeing consumers wanting product in different ways,” he added.DisneyLife will be available for £9.99, just over $15 in U.S. dollars. At this time, Disney is not planning a similar service in the United States. However, Iger said that the technology platform is scalable to the U.S., so it is possible that DisneyLife could come to the United States at a later date.Insider Take:This digital subscription service is a great way for Disney to leverage its huge library of popular content. DisneyLife also provides:

  • A new revenue stream for Walt Disney Co.
  • A low-risk market to test the popularity and price point of DisneyLife
  • An opportunity to reach consumers directly
  • The honor of being the first direct-to-consumer subscription service that offers video, books, music and apps
  • A potential market for add-ons or premium services (e.g., Marvel and Star Wars movies and merchandise)
