‘Tis the season to think about food and gifts. That’s what Chicagoland staple Portillo’s was thinking when it launched Portillo’s 365 on Tuesday, just days after Thanksgiving. Portillo’s 365 sends Portillo’s famous Chicago-style hot dogs, Italian beef sandwiches, ribs and famous chocolate cake to home or business subscribers around the country every other month for a year for $365 annually, including two-day shipping.

“Great food is good anytime of the year. That’s why we’re offering a yearly subscription to Portillo’s favorites. For about a dollar a day (a $40 savings), subscribers will receive some of our most popular dishes, delivered to their homes every other month,” said Portillo’s in their announcement.

“From beef and hot dogs with all the fixings to our award-winning ribs and famous chocolate cake, it’s a feast at the front door all year long.”

Portillo’s 365 is available for individuals and businesses to purchase for themselves or as gifts, ideal for fans of Portillo’s who don’t have a location nearby. Portillo’s started in 1963 in Villa Park, Illinois, but has since expanded to 47 locations throughout Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Arizona, California and Florida.

Not ready to subscribe for an entire year? No problem. Portillo’s announced in mid-November that it is now shipping its famous chocolate cake anywhere in the country for $49.99, including two-day shipping. Since 2000, Portillo’s has shipped Italian beef sandwiches, hot dogs, ribs, tamales and Portillo’s merchandise anywhere in the U.S, but the subscription program and cake shipment were just launched in November.

“This holiday season, we thought we’d stir up our shipping efforts by rising to the occasion, to give you some news that truly takes the cake. You batter believe we are now shipping our famous chocolate cake all over the country. That means you can order our double layer, mega moist chocolate cake and have it sent wherever you want, whenever you want*,” said Portillo’s.

“Make it fun for family and friends! When you ship our chocolate cake to someone, they’ll receive two-layers of cake, plus frosting and a spatula, so they can frost their own famous Portillo’s chocolate cake just like they made it from scratch!”

Insider Take:

This is an interesting take on the subscription box. While some services like Purple Carrot and Blue Apron offer meal kits, Portillo’s does it a little bit differently. First of all, the subscription is annual or nothing. This wouldn’t work for every company, but this keeps it simple for Portillo’s while providing the company with recurring revenue.

Also, the meals are fresh but pre-cooked with some assembly required. Most meal kits also require assembly, but they do not usually come pre-cooked. We haven’t had Portillo’s, but if the pictures are any indication of the flavor and quality, we think this would make a great gift for just about anyone. Hint, hint.
