ABC will be adding a paywall for instant access to its shows starting Jan. 6th, following the model Fox uses. Now, instead of getting next-day streaming video access for free to shows like Modern Family, Scandal and Grey’s Anatomy (for those of us still watching Grey’s), viewers will either have to pay for access or wait a week.

Most viewers will likely migrate to Hulu Plus for access, since a subscription allows access to other network and cable shows. But ABC posted on the FAQ section of its website that viewers can also login to the ABC site and watch next-day videos by verifying their TV provider.

This model is used by HBO Go, but may present a confusion for consumers since the networks are not technically paid services like basic cable and HBO. Then again, it’s almost impossible to get good network service without a cable provider. And younger viewers are already conditioned to seek free online viewing through services like Hulu.

Meanwhile, Hulu’s competitor Netflix is experimenting with pricing models based on the number of users in a subscription plan. Currently, the site allows users to watch video on up to 2 screens at once, including TVs and mobile devices, for $7.99 a month, or four shows on different devices for $11.99 a month.

But now the biggest video streaming site is testing “a $6.99-a-month plan that allows only one video stream to be watched at once, and a $9.99-a-month plan that allows three streams at one time, whether on a TV, tablet or computer.” The plans are not available to all consumers (and may never be), but the $6.99 test may be a response to competition from Amazon Prime. Amazon’s $79 a year two-day shipping plan also lets subscribers get access to its online video streaming content, including its new original show, Alpha House. $79 a year translates into $6.67 a month.
