Travelzoo Doubles Club Membership Revenue Despite Quarterly Loss

Paid Club membership grew 65% as Travelzoo increased spending to attract members. The company is accepting weaker earnings now as it builds a larger recurring-revenue business.

Travelzoo is spending heavily to build its paid membership business, even as that investment pushes its quarterly results into a loss. But the recurring revenue it is building is growing quickly.

The travel deals company reported October 27 that paid Club membership grew 65% year over year in the third quarter, with more members added than in any previous quarter. Revenue from Travelzoo Club membership fees more than doubled, rising from approximately $2.2 million a year earlier to $4.5 million.

Getting there has been expensive. Travelzoo spent $5.8 million acquiring Club Members and trial customers during the quarter, up from $4.7 million in the second quarter. Overall revenue rose 3% to $22.9 million, but the company reported a $2.6 million operating loss, compared with approximately $500,000 in operating profit a year earlier.

Management is making a deliberate investment in recurring revenue. Travelzoo has traditionally earned money from advertising and commissions connected to travel purchases. Annual membership fees are becoming a larger part of the business, while the company continues to earn revenue from its existing activities.

Turning an Established Audience Into Paying Members

Travelzoo introduced paid Club memberships in 2024, giving people access to exclusive travel offers and additional benefits for an annual fee. Customers who joined before 2024 can still receive some travel offers without paying, but the company's most attractive Club offers are reserved for paying members.

That established audience gives Travelzoo a starting point as it expands memberships. During the earnings call, CEO Holger Bartel said slightly more than half of the Club Members added during the quarter were entirely new customers. The rest came from Travelzoo's existing audience.

The company is bringing in new travelers while persuading people who already know its offers to pay for greater access.

In the United States, most new members begin with a 30-day trial for $1, followed by a $50 annual membership if they continue.

Travelzoo added more members in the third quarter while reducing its average U.S. acquisition cost to $54 per annual Club Member, down from $62 in the second quarter. Management also reported an average of $15 in transaction revenue during a member's first 90 days, in addition to the annual membership fee.

In its investor presentation, Travelzoo said acquisition payback was positive within a quarter. The company expects further revenue from travel purchases, advertising and future membership renewals.

The Travel Deals Are Doing Much of the Work

Travelzoo's exclusive offers have become central to attracting paying members and keeping them interested.

During the earnings call, Chief Membership Officer Christina Ciocca described how the company uses appealing travel offers in campaigns on Facebook and other channels. Having more offers to promote allowed Travelzoo to increase its advertising spending while acquiring members at a lower average cost than in the previous quarter.

Those same offers also play an important role in retention. When an analyst asked what Travelzoo had learned about why members renew, Bartel pointed to the exclusive deals. "These are offers that you do not find anywhere else," he said.

The company is adding benefits around that central offering, including complimentary airport lounge access when flights are delayed and a 24-hour travel assistance hotline. Travelzoo believes those additions give members more reasons to maintain their subscriptions.

Behind the offers are longstanding relationships with travel suppliers. Those relationships help Travelzoo negotiate deals for its members while continuing to support the advertising and transaction revenue it already earns.

Why the Investment Is Weighing on Earnings

Travelzoo is paying to acquire members now, while much of the revenue from their annual memberships will appear in later financial results.

Marketing expenses are recorded immediately, but annual membership revenue is recognized over 12 months. Travelzoo illustrated the timing in its investor presentation with a $50 membership purchased September 15. Only $2.08 of that payment would appear as third-quarter revenue.

Management expects earnings to improve as the paid membership base grows and more members renew. Travelzoo projects that annual Club membership revenue will rise from $7.7 million in 2025 to approximately $17 million this year and more than $30 million in 2027.

Travelzoo's quarterly loss was larger than analysts expected. The company reported a loss of $0.20 per share, compared with expectations of approximately $0.09 per share. Its shares closed down 2.7% on October 27.

Travelzoo's projections reflect expected new memberships and renewals from its growing base of paying customers. The company has described what it believes keeps members coming back, although it has not disclosed a numerical renewal rate in its latest earnings materials.

Insider Take

Travelzoo is taking something that has attracted travelers for years, access to appealing deals, and turning its best offers into a reason to pay for membership. One exclusive deal can help sell the subscription and generate a travel purchase, while the company's supplier relationships support both.

There's an interesting challenge in that approach. Travel isn't something most people buy every month. Someone might join because they find a terrific offer for an upcoming vacation, then have no immediate plans to travel again.

Travelzoo's growing membership base suggests plenty of people are willing to pay for access. The longer-term opportunity rests on making that access feel worthwhile throughout the year, including the months when members aren't planning their next trip.
