Reddit's Search Traffic Falls Even as Google's AI Cites It

Reddit's discussions remain a frequent source for Google's AI-generated answers, even as the company reports declining Google search referrals. Reddit is preparing to place greater emphasis on logged-in users who return directly.

Reddit is losing search traffic from Google even as its discussions continue to appear in Google's AI-generated answers. People can find advice from Reddit conversations without visiting the platform, and that change is becoming a concern for one of the internet's largest discussion communities.

During its October 29 earnings call, Reddit reported that search referrals had fallen substantially in the third quarter. The decline accelerated toward the end of September and continued in October, when the drop averaged more than one million referrals per week, according to the company.

CEO Steve Huffman pointed to Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode as major contributors. He also cited changes affecting the visibility of Reddit's machine-translated content as a possible reason for weaker international traffic. Reddit hasn't determined how much each factor contributed.

Reddit's discussions are still appearing in AI answers

People searching for product recommendations or firsthand experiences have long found their way to Reddit through Google. Increasingly, they can get information from those conversations directly in Google's AI-generated answers, without opening the discussion itself.

A September 2026 study by Suff Digital examined 25,940 AI-generated answers to 2,984 questions across 31 topics. Reddit appeared as a cited source in 23.5% of the sampled Google AI Overviews and 19.2% of Google AI Mode answers. The results don't represent every Google search or show how many visits were lost, but they illustrate how often Reddit content appeared in the study's sample.

Huffman said Reddit remains one of the most commonly searched terms on Google and that Google's systems continue to collect information from its platform extensively.

Reddit wants more people to return on their own

Google has helped people discover Reddit discussions and return to communities they already know. As those referrals decline, Reddit is preparing to test a primarily logged-in experience in selected markets outside the United States during the fourth quarter.

Some visitors may eventually need an account to read discussions they can currently access without signing in. Reddit hasn't announced a broader rollout, and it hasn't decided how much material will remain publicly available.

The company believes logging in could give users a more personalized experience and make unauthorized automated collection of its content more difficult. It also wants people to develop the habit of visiting Reddit directly. Logged-in users and app users account for more than 80% of Reddit's monetization, according to the company.

Data licensing offers another source of revenue

Reddit has commercial agreements with AI companies, including Google and OpenAI, that allow access to its data. The agreements generate revenue, but the company hasn't disclosed enough to determine whether licensing income could offset the longer-term effects of declining search referrals.

Visits still support Reddit's advertising business and the conversations that keep its communities active.

Revenue grows while search referrals fall

Reddit reported third-quarter revenue of $895 million, up 53% from a year earlier, driven mainly by advertising. Global daily active users reached 130.3 million, an increase of 12% year over year, though the figure was roughly unchanged from the second quarter.

In the United States, daily active users declined from 53.2 million in the second quarter to 50.7 million in the third. Reddit warned that continued weakness in search referrals could contribute to a low-double-digit percentage decline in global daily active users during the fourth quarter.

INSIDER TAKE

Reddit is worth watching because its experience may reveal how AI-driven discovery changes how content businesses make money. Few platforms combine such a visible presence in AI answers with a large audience and a substantial advertising business.

For subscription operators, the harder question is how to measure content's contribution to acquiring and retaining customers when fewer people arrive through search. Reddit's results may offer an early indication of whether strong content and growing revenue can coexist with a sustained decline in search referrals.
