MS NOW to Launch $7.99 Membership With Live News and Community

direct-to-consumer memberships ms now news media subscription strategy Aug 20, 2026

The former MSNBC is giving viewers a way to pay the network directly for 24/7 live programming, journalist access, member community features and original creator content.

MS NOW will launch its first direct-to-consumer membership on September 9, priced at $7.99 per month or $79.99 per year.

New members can get their first full year for $39.99 through September 30 at 11:59 p.m. ET. Taxes and terms apply.

Live programming is one piece of the offer.

The membership also includes opportunities to interact directly with MS NOW journalists, exclusive member community features, original creator content, a new roster of contributors and experts, and new coverage areas focused on how news and politics affect everyday life.

MS NOW says it surveyed 18,000 people, held one-on-one consumer conversations and tested different product concepts before setting the launch offer.

The research included both existing fans and people MS NOW hopes to bring into the brand.

From MSNBC to a Direct Member Relationship

MSNBC officially became MS NOW on November 15, 2025, as the network prepared for its move into Versant.

Versant completed its separation from Comcast on January 2, 2026, and began trading as an independent public company on January 5. MS NOW is one of the media brands in its portfolio.

People can still watch the network through traditional television and live TV services. The membership creates a separate paid relationship with MS NOW and gives members 24/7 access to its live programming through the new product.

MS NOW had been developing the membership for months. In December 2025, network president Rebecca Kutler described plans for a product built around the live channel, access to MS NOW personalities and community participation.

The network has also been building audience connections through live events. Tickets to its September 26 MS NOW Live event in Texas include a special offer for one free year of membership.

Journalist Access and Community Expand the Offer

At $7.99 per month, live access provides a clear starting point for the membership.

The rest of the offer is built around viewers' relationship with MS NOW journalists and the broader community around the brand.

Members will have ways to interact directly with journalists and with one another. MS NOW is also adding original creator content, new contributors and experts, and coverage created specifically for the membership experience.

Those features give members reasons to return between major news events.

The test will be whether members use those benefits often enough to see value between major news cycles.

The pricing structure is also designed to encourage commitment. The standard $79.99 annual plan costs about 17% less than paying monthly for a year, while the $39.99 introductory offer cuts the annual price in half for early members.

INSIDER TAKE

MS NOW is betting that its most engaged viewers will pay for a closer relationship with the brand.

The live feed gives people a familiar reason to join. Journalist access, community features and original creator content give MS NOW more ways to build an ongoing member experience around it.

The company also did substantial product research before launch, including 18,000 survey responses, one-on-one consumer conversations and multiple rounds of testing.

The $39.99 introductory offer gives early members a steep discount for the first year.

Will members keep paying once the introductory year ends? Can MS NOW turn viewers into members who maintain a direct recurring relationship with the brand? And in a crowded market for news, streaming and paid memberships, can the offer become strong enough to stand on its own?

Those are the questions that will determine whether MS NOW has built a lasting membership business or simply another way to watch the network.
