Subscription growth helped Truecaller build a larger recurring revenue base in the second quarter, but it wasn’t enough to offset a sharp decline in advertising.

Truecaller is a Stockholm-based caller identification and spam-blocking company. India is its largest market. The company passed 500 million monthly active users worldwide in March and averaged 3.99 million paying subscribers during the second quarter.

Net sales fell 21% to SEK 393.2 million. Premium revenue rose 36% to SEK 118.6 million, or 41% excluding currency movements. Advertising revenue fell 34% excluding currency movements.

Recurring revenue, which includes Premium subscriptions and Truecaller for Business, accounted for 49% of sales. That compares with 33% a year earlier.

More Free Users Are Converting

The average number of paying subscribers increased 33%. Truecaller’s conversion rate rose to 0.79% from 0.65% a year earlier.

Reported monthly revenue per paying subscriber was nearly flat at SEK 10.02. On a reported basis, subscriber growth drove most of the increase in Premium revenue.

Truecaller said iOS remains an important growth area. iOS users generated about 48% of Premium revenue during the quarter. The conversion rate among iOS users increased to 4.27% from 3.05%.

Advertising Decline Pulls Down Sales

Advertising revenue reached SEK 200 million. While revenue was down sharply from a year earlier, it improved 6% from the first quarter.

Truecaller for Business generated SEK 73.8 million. Revenue was down 5% as reported but increased 8% excluding currency movements. Annual recurring revenue from its Verified Business product reached SEK 256 million, up 12%.

Operating profit fell to SEK 73.5 million from SEK 157 million. The quarter included SEK 23.5 million in restructuring costs.

Subscription Insider Take

Truecaller has a vast free audience and a growing paid subscription business. The opportunity is clear. The company still needs to convert far more of that audience if it wants subscriptions to reduce its reliance on advertising.

The movement in its subscription measures is encouraging. Conversion improved, paying subscribers increased and reported revenue per paying subscriber held steady.

The recurring revenue share needs context, though. It rose because Premium grew while advertising fell sharply. A larger recurring revenue share doesn’t necessarily mean the full business is growing.

Watch whether Truecaller can continue improving conversion while keeping revenue per paying subscriber steady. The results also make iOS worth watching. That audience produces a large share of Premium revenue despite representing a smaller part of Truecaller’s global user base.
