Many industries are taking advantage of subscription and membership models to test new markets, products and services. The latest company to experiment is StayAwhile, a membership model for temporary housing that will launch in New York and Miami this spring. A StayAwhile membership will allow its clients to live in multiple locales: “Destinations around the world to call home; one membership to unlock it all.”

An annual fee of $99 applies to members, and they need to pay a $99 initiaton fee to begin booking. From now until May, the annual fee is being waived for founding members, but the initiation fee still applies..After that, members will pay for their stays, starting at $1,199 per week. Rates will vary by location.

StayAwhile has curated a network of membership-only hotels and furnished apartments in different cities around the world. Members can move between them, leaving their stuff as they come and go and only paying for the nights they use. Clients can live a flexible, global lifestyle that is not place-dependent.

“Live like you’re at home. Your comfort and peace of mind are our top priorities. (And strong wifi!) We’ll pair you with a hotel or professionally-managed, furnished apartment in your destination city. Your accommodations have been vetted by our team of travelers and tastemakers,” says StayAwhile.

What makes StayAwhile different is that the company curates and vets your hotel and apartment options for you, so you don’t have to rely just on online photos and reviews. Another key difference is that you can leave your belongings behind as you travel from place to place.

“Home is where your stuff is. Whether that’s your slippers, your favorite bath products or books and photos. We store them for you when you’re not there, and bring them back when you return to town,” StayAwhile promises.

StayAwhile calls it a customized lifestyle, offering lodging only on the nights you need it without the need for leases, security deposits or long-term commitments. Clients can move in and out as needed, traveling between destinations.

According to a March article in Lodging Magazine, the idea behind StayAwhile is to help hoteliers use some of their unoccupied inventory by offering them to StayAwhile members. After the company’s initial launch, it hopes to expand to an additional 25 major cities including Austin, Seattle, Chicago, Denver, Boston, Stockholm, Berlin, Amsterdam, Paris, Barcelona, Rome, Manila, Buenos Aires, Hong Kong and Bangkok. StayAwhile is not yet accepting reservations, but prospective members can apply to be on the waitlist and to get updates on the StayAwhile launch.

Insider Take:

It hadn’t occurred to us before reading about StayAwhile, but the membership concept makes a lot of sense for the hotel and long-term travel industry. Travelers are becoming less “place dependent” with a desire to live and work just about anywhere. StayAwhile makes this possible by taking the work out of finding the right place to stay. It also helps hotels fill unused space for stays that they might be losing to services like Airbnb. This is another good example of how innovation and the membership model work hand in hand to make a creative idea possible. We love it!
