Two months after making its debut in the U.S., private movie club Sinemia has lowered the cost of its tiered movie subscription plans, making it a formidable competitor to MoviePass. Calling the discounted monthly movie ticket plans its ‘biggest sale ever,’ Sinemia offers 2D and 3D tickets to movies in participating theaters, including IMAX, 4DX, SD, ScreenX and DBox movies, as well as private screenings and movies with reserved seating. The new pricing is available to subscribers in the U.S., Canada, the U.K. and Australia.

Sinemia’s new pricing* is as follows:

Similar to MoviePass, Sinemia members sign up for a plan and receive a pre-paid debit card in the mail. Then they download the Sinemia app from the App Store or Google Play Store to buy advanced tickets for movies like Tully, Terminal, Deadpool 2, Solo: A Star Wars Story, Incredibles 2, Justice League Part Two and Captain Marvel. Movie club members can also buy their tickets on site, at the box office or via movie ticket kiosk. Tickets can be purchased up to 30 days in advance. There are no blackout dates, and Sinemia says its memberships are available in every major movie theater in the U.S.

‘Our vision and goal has been to create a movie ticket subscription service that adds value for both for moviegoers and the movie industry. We believe the only way to accomplish this is through a sustainable movie subscription model,’ said Rifat Oguz, founder and CEO of Sinemia in a news release. ‘Since 2014, we’ve been fine-tuning our model and are now the leading movie subscription service in the Canada, UK, Turkey, and Australia. Thanks to our global experience, we’ve created a sustainable model and are very excited to bring a new slate of affordable and flexible subscription plans to moviegoers.’

When the service launched in the U.S. in March, Oguz said the company wanted ‘to create a more elevated moviegoing experience’ by integrated online and offline experiences. At that time, the service offered a two-tickets-per-month plan for $8.99 a month, billed annually, and a three-tickets-per-month plan for $10.99, billed annually, as its Oscars 2018 promo.

Sinemia announced its new pricing just weeks after MoviePass reduced its offering from its movie-a-day plan to four movies per month. MoviePass has since rescinded that offer and is now offering its movie-a-day plan.

Insider Take:

I love movies, but I am the infrequent movie goer who is far more apt to watch a movie on Netflix or Amazon Prime than to go to a theater. These new movie subscriptions, however, have me rethinking that. Seeing a movie in the theater can be an expensive experience, complete with pricey popcorn, soda and candy, but it is also a great way to see the latest movies with a quality you just can’t get at home. Services like MoviePass and Sinemia make movie going affordable.

Yet I am still hesitant to subscribe. Here’s why. Both services seems to have good deals, but MoviePass also seems volatile, changing its pricing and promotions so frequently it is hard to keep up. If Sinemia can remain consistent with its offering, with the occasional pricing promotion and partnership, it could prove to be a strong challenger to MoviePass.
