Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) just made it a little easier for college students to enjoy the many perks of a Prime membership, offering students enrolled in two- and four-year colleges a student rate of $5.49 a month. The monthly price of Amazon Prime Student is 50 percent off Prime’s regular price, following a six-month free trial, without the annual commitment. The free trial is provided courtesy of Sprint. Qualifying college students can pay $49 a year (the equivalent of $4.08 per month) instead to save 20 percent on an annual membership.

‘Our new monthly payment option lets students enjoy the best of Amazon in a more flexible and simple way,’ said Ellen Kinney, Director of Prime Student, Amazon in a press release. ‘Whether it’s getting their favorite products with free shipping or streaming thousands of popular movies and shows, Prime student members can experience all the benefits of Prime.’

With Prime, college students can access free two-day shipping on more than 50 million products including textbooks, school supllies and electronics, free one-day and same-day delivery on select products in more than 5,000 cities, Prime video, Twitch Prime, Prime Music, Prime Photos, Prime Reading, and exclusive deals. To sign up, college students need to provide a valid email address with an EDU suffix.

The day after this announcement was made, Amazon announced a new shopping option for teens whose parents have an Amazon Prime account. Under the new program, teens ages 13 to 17 can get their own login, separate from their parents with some caveats. Restrictions include a preset spending limit or approval by the parents before orders are placed and processed.

‘As a parent of a teen, I know how they crave independence, but at the same time, that has to be balanced with the convenience and trust that parents need. We’ve listened to families and have built a great experience for both teens and parents,’ said Michael Carr, Vice President, Amazon Households in a press release. ‘For teens who have a parent with a Prime membership, they can also access Prime benefits at no additional cost, including fast, free shipping, Prime Video and gaming benefits with Twitch Prime.’

Insider Take:

Why is Amazon offering these new options for younger shoppers? We think the company wants to appeal to the next generation of shoppers to hook them early. Teens will love the opportunity to be somewhat independent and to access Prime services (e.g., Prime Video, Twitch Prime, free two-day shipping), and it doesn’t cost the parents any more to add their kids to the account.

The pricing deal for college students has a two-fold purpose: first, to give Sprint the opportunity to reach this young audience, and second, to bring college students into the Prime family with the hopes of developing an ongoing relationship with college shoppers that will extend long beyond the college years.
