Cleanly, an on-demand laundry and dry-cleaning start-up, hopes to become the Amazon of laundry, reports TechCrunch. That’s why the 16-month-old company launched Cleanly Reserve, a membership program that offers discounts and other perks to monthly and annual members.

As with their primary service Cleanly, Cleanly Reserve works via mobile app where members schedule pick-ups and deliveries. At launch of the membership service, there are two options – monthly and annual plans, following a 30-day free trial. Members get the following benefits from their laundry subscriptions, as well as first access to future products and services:

MONTHLY YEARLY
$14.99 a month $89.99 a year
3% off every order 7% off every order
Free delivery Free delivery
No minimum order No minimum order
Up to 4 hang dry items free Up to 10 hang dry items free
Standard cancellation fees apply 12 free cancellations or reschedules

“Since we began, Cleanly has been dedicated to solving one chore we all deal with on a weekly basis – laundry. More importantly, we’ve been on a mission to give people back the only thing that truly matters – time. Time to do things we love,” Cleanly says on its website. “With Cleanly Reserve, you’ll get free delivery, free hang dry, no order minimums, and much, much more. Laundry hasn’t been this easy since mom used to do it.”

How does it work? Cleanly customers download the Cleanly app from an SMS link (or the App store; we couldn’t find it in the Google Play store), then request a pick-up from a Cleanly valet. Using custom bags and QR code technology, valets return clothing items to their New York-based fulfillment center for itemizing, sorting and invoicing. Cleanly vendors and partners collect, clean and return items to and from the fulfillment centers. Valets then deliver customer items at the requested time.

Customers are charged according to the prices on their comprehensive price list. While some items seem pricey ($4 per mitten), others seem like a deal (tuxedo for $20), and are comparable to most dry cleaners. According to Cleanly, wash and fold items have a 24-hour turnaround time, and laundered shirts and dry cleaning have a 48-hour turnaround time, except weekends which have a 72-hour turnaround time.

Insider Take:

Since we hate laundry as much as the next guy, we’d love to have someone come and pick up our laundry, and we’d be willing to schedule regular pick-ups to save money doing it. At the outset, Cleanly Reserve sounds like it has promise, but there are a few possible hiccups. For example, Cleanly doesn’t actually do the laundering and dry cleaning themselves. Instead, they pick up, drop off and act as a hub for their vendors and partners who do the actual work. The partners must be thoroughly vetted and held to high quality standards for this arrangement to work.

In addition, valets must be timely and trustworthy. Any snags along the way with partners, vendors or valets could mean lost or delayed items. Assuming Cleanly has these items nailed, we see potential for this membership program to be popular in major metro areas like New York City. After all, who doesn’t like saving time and money?
