After announcing its acquisition of Capital New York last week, Politico says it’s looking to start a high-end subscription for Capital, which focuses on media, City Hall and New York State politics and policy.Jim VandeHei, Politico’s co-founder and executive editor, told Bloomberg.com that he envisions charging $99 to $1,000 a year for a premium subscription. While some have expressed surprise at this price, it’s not without precedent. Politico already charges $5,000 a year for Politico Pro, a real-time update service for DC’s political power-mongers. (Note: The $5,000 price tag is a $2,000 increase from when we first reported on Politico Pro’s premium subscription service back in April of 2012.)”The plan is to take what they already do and put it on steroids,” VandeHei said about Capital New York in an interview quoted by Bloomberg.com.That’s a good strategy, especially since it’s easier to charge when your target audiences “needs to know” your information (as opposed to “nice-to-know” information).Plus, B2B subscriptions, especially when sold on a group or site license level, get much higher retention rates — around 96% for Politico Pro, in fact. The catch, however, is that Politico Pro’s subscription plan is Blackberry-optimized for the Congressional crowd that loves real-time updates. New York doesn’t have a one-preferred device culture, so Capital New York will have to create an offer that’s compelling for a unique audience of politicians, policy makers and media professionals. On a related operational note, Capital will be run separately from Politico and plans to hire 24 editors and reporters. It’s currently operating with an editorial staff of seven (once again proving that lean, focused operations are more likely to see profits and growth online versus smorgasbord legacy news sites).
