Last week, Microsoft confirmed the rumors about its gaming subscriptions are true. The company has been working on an ultimate gaming subscription that will combine Xbox Game Pass with Xbox Live Gold. The combined subscription will be called Game Pass Ultimate and be available for $14.99 a month. So far, Xbox has invited a limited number of Xbox Insiders to test the subscription before it launches on a bigger scale later this year in existing Game Pass markets.

Xbox Game Pass first launched in June 2017 as a way for gamers to try different games and as a forum for developers to test new games. The service currently offers unlimited play from a curated list of more than 100 games, including Minecraft, Tomb Raider, Vampyr and Mortal Kombat for $9.99 a month, after a three-month promotional price of $1 (promotional offer is available April 11 through May 12). Xbox Game Pass allows subscribers to play games the day they launch from Xbox Game Studios and ID@Xbox partners, download games for online or offline play, and get discounts on games, add-ons and consumables.

An Xbox Live Gold subscription is a multiplayer console gaming networking, allowing players to compete online against each other. Subscribers get two to four free games like Forza Street, Unruly Heroes, Frostpunk and Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition every month as well as Xbox One store discounts between 50% and 75% on games and add-ons. Xbox Live Gold is offering a promotion of $1 for the first month (through May 12) and $9.99 a month thereafter.

Your feedback directly contributes to the evolution of Xbox Game Pass – thank you for taking the time to help us continually improve the service. A top request you have shared from day one is to provide an option to get Xbox Game Pass and the most advanced multiplayer network, Xbox Live Gold, in a single membership, said Ben Decker, head of gaming services at Microsoft, in the April 16 announcement.

We heard you. Today, were excited to announce Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate will include all of the benefits of Xbox Live Gold with Xbox Game Pass. That means the full Xbox Game Pass library of over 100 high quality games, and Xbox Live Gold online multiplayer, in one convenient membership for $14.99 a month, Decker added. With Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, gamers will be able to play together on the most-advanced multiplayer network and discover their next favorite game.

Last week Xbox also shared details about its new Xbox One S all-digital, disc-free console, with cloud storage and a 1TB digital library. The all-digital console and an Xbox wireless controller will be available for $249, and it is currently available for pre-order. It comes with Minecraft, Sea of Thieves and Forza Horizon 3 with free shipping if purchased from the Microsoft Store. It also offers 4K Ultra HD resolution for video streaming, high dynamic range and spatial audio.

Insider Take:

For gamers, Game Pass Ultimate is the best of both worlds. Whether subscribers like being able to try new games or compete against friends or foes, the subscription allows gamers to do it. For gamers who subscribe to both plans now, they will save money with the new ultimate subscription. For those who subscribe to just one of the plans, but might want to try the other, Xbox may very well attract new subscribers. Timing it with pre-orders of its new, digital-only console is simply good marketing. They might as well take advantage of it!
