Shopify Merchants Made Over $1.5 Billion in Sales Thanksgiving Weekend

Shopify merchants had an incredible Black Friday Cyber Monday (BCFM) shopping weekend, with more than 600,000 sellers from 175 countries generating more than $1.5 billion in sales. Among the highlights was the move to mobile shopping. Sixty-six percent of Shopify sales during BCFM occurred on mobile devices, compared to 34 percent shopping on desktops. Shopify said part of this was due to responsive themes and a variety of mobile-friendly payment options including Shopify Pay, Google Pay and Apple Pay.

FTC Sends More Than 2,200 Refund Checks to UrthBox Customers

Christmas came early for former subscribers of UrthBox snack boxes. Earlier this month, the Federal Trade Commission mailed 2,221 refund checks totaling more than $84,000 in refunds to customers who were misled by a free trial offer. The customers thought they were signing up for a free snack box after paying a nominal shipping and handling fee but, instead, UrthBox signed them for a six-month subscription if they didnt opt out in time.

FTC Cracks Down on ‘Up To’ Claims, Stating Most Customers Must Receive Maximum Benefit

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recently issued a study indicating that when marketers use the phrase "up to" in claims about their products, many consumers are likely to believe that they will achieve the maximum "up to" results. The study describes how a group of consumers thought replacement home windows purporting to provide "up to 47%" savings in energy costs would provide that much for all or most buyers.
