Satellite radio service SiriusXM (NASDAQ: SIRI) will start reaching a whole new audience with the launch of a six-month, standalone streaming music subscription service priced at $30 for six months, reports Tech Times. The new streaming music service, which boasts 30 million paid subscribers, will allow SiriusXM to compete directly with services like Pandora, Spotify, Tidal, Apple Music and others. No satellite radio device is required.

According to Tech Times, the offering is not new. Streaming music subscriptions have been available to SiriusXM customers, including those who subscribe to its pricier All Access package, but the company has not actively promoted it as an option. That’s about to change.

SiriusXM launched a marketing campaign to prospective subscribers, offering a standalone streaming music subscription for six months for $30, which equates to $5 a month. As part of the package, subscribers can access all of SiriusXM’s content online and through Android and iOS apps.

The $30 price tag is a 68 percent savings off the current monthly rate of $15.99, not including taxes and fees. After the six-month trial period, the service is automatically renewable on a monthly basis at “then-current” rates. The offer is only available to new subscribers, and SiriusXM can terminate the offer at any time. Subscribers can also cancel their subscriptions at any time. A credit card is required at sign-up.

This offer gives new subscribers access to the satellite radio service’s entire channel line-up, including everything from Howard Stern and E Street Radio (Bruce Springsteen 24/7) to Jamie Foxx’s World and The Michael Smerconish Program.

In addition to this package, SiriusXM offers an almost dizzying array of subscription packages, starting at $10.99 for the mostly music package and going up to $19.99 for its SiriusXM All Access package. The All Access package is the only one that automatically includes Internet listening, thought a streaming subscription can be added onto other packages for $4.00 a month. The All Access package is also the only one where subscribers can access Howard Stern’s program, every NFL game and every NASCAR race.

Insider Take:

Since streaming music services are already available on SiriusXM, this new promotion is a new brainer – and what better way to indoctrinate prospective listeners than by giving them your top-of-the-line subscription package at a bargain price. You bring them in with a great deal, and you give them six full months to discover your favorite channels and programs. This is a very simple but brilliant strategy.

It is also a great way for SiriusXM to differentiate itself from its competitors, especially as iHeartRadio, Pandora and Amazon roll out their new streaming music products. Give subscribers something they can’t get anywhere else, and if the price point and quality are sufficient, you will convert them to loyal listeners over time in spite of the many streaming music choices available. Well done, SiriusXM.
