Book lovers finally have their Netflix equivalent.Scribd. just launched a subscription service where consumers can pay $8.99 a month to get unlimited access to all of the site’s eBooks. This is a different business model than most eBook sellers have adopted. Amazon promotes the outright sale of eBooks, while news sites like the Toronto Star have created eBook subscriptions of curated and limited content from the newspaper. Both models allow consumers to own their eBooks, while the Scribd. model is based on rentals, like Netflix, not ownership. The big selling point, of course, is the variety of titles available through Scribd. — thousands of book titles from major publishers and independent presses, as well as millions of self-published documents, articles and other written works.Scribd. says they will remit payment to publishers (and authors) once a reader reads a certain percentage of any work. While the book industry is definitely competitive, Scribd. seems poised for success with this subscription model, especially since Scribd. itself is platform-agnostic. That means that subscribers can read their rented books on an iPad, iPhone, Android tablet or browser. (Note: Scribd. supports tablets like the Kindle Fire and Nook HD, but not e-ink based readers like the Kindle or Nook Simple Touch.)What do you think? Is Scribd. going to be the new Netflix?
