For years, Major League Baseball has been turning a pretty penny through its online subscription site MLB.com. Now the National Football League is looking to rack up similar digital revenues. The NFL just launched NFL Now, a video freemium app available through mobile, desktop, and a variety of set-top boxes. The app is taking advantage of new digital devices (which are paving the way for paid content sales through convenient and lean-back viewing) and marketing automation to create personalized streams of news, game highlights and long-form videos. The app is currently available for Android, iOS, and Microsoft, as well as on Roku and Amazon Fire TV. And Apple TV launch is scheduled and NFL Now is looking to launch on Chromecast and other connected TV platforms. And while there is a website for NFL Now, it’s clearly a platform more optimized for viewing via one of the aforementioned devices.NFL Now has a freemium model, making a decent amount of content available for free, but charging $2 a month for premium access in the US and $5 for international access. Premium access includes access to real-time highlights on game day and unlimited, ad-free access to the NFL Films vault of shows.
