Responding to an increase in mobile use by its military audience, The Air Force Times has introduced a new subscription app for smartphones and tablets. While the newspaper has been available online for some time, the introduction of the new app was part of an overall digital upgrade that will include a redesigned website.Vice president and general manager of Military Times, Peter Lundquist, said in a news release, “Our military audience is consuming news on their phones. These apps deliver our independent reporting right to their devices, including breaking news alerts.” Military Times includes under its umbrella Air Force Times, Army Times, Navy Times and Marine Corps Times. The app is available on both Android and Apple devices as a free download and users automatically have access to top stories and photo galleries on the homepage. But the app also has an automatically renewing monthly subscription for $1.99 per month for users seeking access to all of the content on the site. For visitors to its website at www.airforcetimes.com, many articles are behind the paywall. Access is free for current print subscribers, with options for a $0.59 weekly online pass or a “Digital Day pass” for $0.99.Still, at $1.99 a month, the new mobile app is slightly cheaper than website subscriptions, demonstrating how consumers are more likely to pay for content delivered in a convenient format.Air Force Times is betting that users will continue their move to viewing its content on mobile devices and this new subscription offering is another way to increase revenue and retention of readers.
